How to Measure Foam Before Ordering

Learn how to measure foam sheets, cushions, mattresses and replacement foam before placing an order.

Measure the finished space

When ordering replacement foam, measure the space or cover the foam needs to fill. If you are replacing a cushion, measure the cover rather than relying only on the old foam, because old foam may have compressed or lost shape.

Measure width, depth and thickness carefully. Use millimetres where possible for better accuracy.

Check the shape

Many foam products are rectangular, but some cushions and inserts have shaped corners, angled edges or unusual profiles. If the shape is not simple, make a clear note before ordering.

For complex projects, a template may be needed so the foam can be cut correctly.

Consider compression

Some foam may need to fit snugly inside a fabric cover. If the foam is too small, the cushion may look loose. If it is too large, it may be difficult to fit or may distort the cover.

The correct allowance depends on the product and cover design.

Measuring mattresses and toppers

For mattresses and toppers, check the listed bed size and the actual product dimensions. Standard names such as Single, Double, King Size and Super King should still be checked against the measurements shown.

Also check the depth, especially if you are using fitted sheets, protectors or a bed frame with limited space.

Check before you order

Measure twice before placing the order. Foam that is cut or made to specification may not be returnable in the same way as standard stocked goods.

If in doubt, contact the All Foam team before ordering.
