Foam Mattress Information

Open the sections below for practical guidance on foam mattress construction, comfort, sizing and care. All content is included in the page HTML and remains available to search engines.

Memory foam and reflex foam mattress construction

Many foam mattresses combine a pressure-responsive memory foam comfort layer with a deeper reflex or polyurethane support layer. Memory foam changes feel gradually in response to body heat and pressure, while reflex foam responds more quickly and helps provide structure, resilience and support.

The feel of a mattress depends on the thickness and density of each foam layer, not simply whether the product contains memory foam. Review the full layer specification on the individual mattress card before ordering.

Choosing the right foam mattress comfort level

Comfort descriptions such as medium or firm provide useful guidance, but the final feel is also affected by body weight, sleeping position, mattress depth and the type of bed base. A supportive mattress should distribute body weight evenly while providing enough resistance to maintain a stable sleeping position.

Compare the comfort rating, construction and intended use on each product page rather than choosing by one label alone. Contact the All Foam team when you need help comparing options.

Bed base compatibility and mattress support

A suitable bed base helps a foam mattress perform correctly and retain its shape. Check that the base is level, structurally sound and compatible with the mattress dimensions. Slatted bases should provide even support without gaps that are too wide for the mattress construction.

Do not place a new mattress on a damaged or sagging base, as this can affect support, comfort and product life.

Foam mattress care and cleaning

Use a suitable mattress protector, follow the care instructions supplied with the product and check whether the cover can be removed or cleaned. Keep the mattress dry and well ventilated, and avoid folding or bending it in a way that could damage the foam layers.

Where rotation is recommended, follow the instructions on the individual product page. Memory foam mattresses are not always designed to be turned over because the comfort and support layers are arranged in a specific order.

UK-made foam mattresses and quality standards

All Foam mattresses are made in the UK using selected foam components and product specifications developed for practical comfort and support. The foam supply and conversion process is supported by ISO 9001:2015 quality management.

Foam mattress guide

How Do Foam Mattresses Work?

Foam mattresses use one or more carefully selected foam layers to provide comfort, pressure relief and full-body support. The upper comfort layer influences how the mattress feels when you lie down and helps distribute body weight more evenly, while the deeper support layer gives the mattress stability, helps it retain its shape and supports the sleeper throughout the night.

Memory foam is a viscoelastic polyurethane foam that responds to body heat and pressure. It gradually moulds to the contours of the body, helping to reduce pressure around areas such as the shoulders, hips and back. Once the pressure is removed, the foam slowly returns towards its original shape. Reflex foam and conventional polyurethane foam respond more quickly and are commonly used as supportive base layers or responsive comfort layers within foam mattresses.

The best foam mattress depends on the complete mattress construction rather than the foam type alone. Compare the foam layers, comfort or firmness rating, mattress depth, cover, bed base compatibility and intended use shown on each product page. You can also review the relevant foam technical data sheets before ordering.

Helpful answers

Foam Mattress FAQs

These answers cover common questions about foam mattress construction, delivery, sizing and use. Product-specific details should always be checked on the individual mattress products.

Ask the All Foam Team
How long does a foam mattress take to deliver?

Orders normally take one working day to process. Once dispatched, they are sent using a 24-hour courier service, so delivery is usually made on the next working day after dispatch.

Is VAT charged on foam mattress orders?

All Foam is not currently VAT registered, so VAT is not charged on orders. Delivery options are shown clearly at checkout.

What is the difference between memory foam and reflex foam?

Memory foam responds gradually to body heat and pressure and moulds more closely to the body's contours. Reflex foam responds more quickly and is commonly used to provide resilient comfort and structural support within the mattress.

Are foam mattresses suitable for everyday use?

A correctly specified foam mattress can be suitable for everyday use. Check the mattress construction, foam grade, depth, comfort rating, cover and intended use before ordering.

How do I choose the correct foam mattress size?

Measure the bed base and compare it with the exact dimensions shown in the mattress size selector. Do not rely on the size name alone, particularly when replacing a mattress for an older or non-standard bed frame.

Can a foam mattress be used on a slatted bed base?

Many foam mattresses can be used on a suitable slatted base, provided the base is level, supportive and the gaps between slats are appropriate for the mattress. Check the individual product specification and bed manufacturer's guidance.

Do memory foam mattresses need to be turned?

Many layered memory foam mattresses are designed with a specific sleeping surface and should not be turned over. Follow the rotation and care instructions shown on the individual product page.

Where can I find technical information about the foam layers?

Material specifications are available on the Foam Data Sheets page. Each product card also links to the relevant technical data sheet.
