A mattress topper can make a sound mattress feel softer, firmer or more responsive, but it cannot repair a sagging mattress. If the support core, springs or bed base have failed, the topper will follow the dip underneath it.
The useful question is whether the problem is a surface comfort issue or a structural fault. A topper is designed for the first. A replacement mattress or repaired bed base is normally required for the second.
The quick answer
A topper may help when:
- the mattress is flat and supportive
- the surface feels too firm or lacks cushioning
- there are only light, shallow body impressions
- you want to change the surface response
- the mattress is used for a guest bed or occasional sleeping area
A topper is not a repair when:
- there is a visible central dip
- springs or the support core have failed
- the edges collapse
- the bed base is broken or uneven
- the mattress is damp, damaged or heavily worn
- the sleeper rolls towards one area because the surface is no longer level
Why does a topper follow the sag?
A topper is a flexible layer. It does not have a rigid frame or independent support system. When placed over a hollow or dip, it bends into that shape under load.
A thicker topper may hide the outline when the bed is empty, but the weakness remains. Once weight is applied, the topper and sleeper are still supported by the damaged mattress underneath.
This is why a topper can improve comfort but cannot restore lost structure.
Check the bed base first
Some apparent mattress sagging is caused or made worse by the base. Remove the mattress and inspect:
- broken or bowed slats
- missing centre support
- a platform that is no longer level
- wide gaps between slats
- loose frame joints
- damp or damaged boards
Place a straight edge across the base where practical. If the support is uneven, repair it before judging the mattress.
A new mattress or topper placed on a failing base can develop the same problem.
Look at the mattress without bedding
Remove the duvet, protector and sheets. Check the mattress in good light.
Look for:
- permanent hollows
- uneven sides
- broken seams or cover distortion
- areas that remain compressed after the bed is unused
- lumps, crumbling foam or protruding components
- moisture marks or odour
A slight temporary impression after use is not the same as a deep permanent dip. Compare the surface after it has been unloaded for a reasonable period.
Measure the dip
A straight edge or taut line across the mattress can help show whether the surface has dropped. Do not push the measuring tool into the foam.
The exact warranty threshold depends on the product terms, so do not assume that one measurement applies to every mattress. Record photographs and measurements and contact the supplier if the mattress is within warranty.
When can a topper still be useful?
A topper can be useful when the existing mattress remains structurally sound but the surface no longer suits your preference.
Examples include:
- a firm mattress that needs more cushioning
- a guest mattress that needs a more comfortable top layer
- a sofa bed with a thin but level sleeping surface
- a mattress that feels stable but has a less responsive cover
The All Foam mattress topper range includes memory foam, medium density, high density and Reflex options. Each changes the surface in a different way.
Which topper changes comfort most?
Material and thickness both matter.
Memory foam responds more slowly to pressure and follows the body more closely. The All Foam memory foam topper is available in 2.5cm, 5cm and 7cm thicknesses.
Medium density foam gives a simpler softer feel layer. High density foam gives a firmer and more stable surface. Reflex Medium and Reflex Firm recover more quickly than memory foam and offer resilient alternatives.
Read memory foam vs standard foam mattress toppers before choosing by name alone.
Will a firm topper support a sagging mattress?
No. A firmer topper still needs an even foundation. It may spread pressure differently, but it will not rebuild a failed core.
Adding a firm topper over a dip can also create an awkward result: the topper bends into the hollow while making the surrounding surface harder. That may make the unevenness more noticeable rather than less.
Can plywood under the mattress fix sagging?
A board can change the feel of the bed base, but it is not a universal mattress repair. It may reduce flex in a sprung or slatted base, but it can also reduce ventilation and make the setup firmer.
If the mattress itself has failed, a board underneath does not restore the internal foam or springs. Check the frame design and mattress instructions before adding anything to the base.
Topper or new mattress?
Choose a topper when the mattress is:
- the correct size
- flat and stable
- dry and hygienic
- supported by a suitable base
- uncomfortable mainly at the surface
Consider a new mattress when:
- the sag is permanent and structural
- support has become uneven
- the mattress is beyond its useful condition
- the problem returns immediately after rotating
- a topper would only hide the fault temporarily

What if only one side feels worn?
Uneven wear can happen when the same sleeping position is used for a long time or the base supports one side differently.
Follow the mattress care instructions. Some mattresses can be rotated head to foot, but layered memory foam mattresses are not normally designed to be flipped upside down. Rotation may even out minor wear, but it cannot repair a collapsed area.
Check the warranty before modifying anything
Do not cut the mattress, remove fixed covers or add improvised support without checking the terms. Modifying the product can make a warranty assessment harder.
Keep:
- proof of purchase
- product name and size
- photographs of the mattress and base
- measurements of the affected area
- notes about when the issue began
Contact the seller before disposing of the mattress if a warranty claim may apply.
A topper needs the correct size
A topper should match the sleeping surface closely. One that is too small can move and leave unsupported edges. One that is too large can fold or compress against the frame.
All Foam toppers are available in standard UK sizes. For unusual spaces, read the custom cut topper sizing guide and contact the team for shaped requirements.
What about mild body impressions?
A shallow impression in the top comfort material is different from a failed support core. Foam naturally compresses during use, and the surface may take time to recover after weight is removed.
Check the mattress after it has been unused, compare both sides and inspect the base. If the surface remains level enough to support the body and the concern is mainly feel, a topper may be reasonable. If the impression is deep, permanent or accompanied by rolling and uneven support, treat it as a structural issue.
Test the mattress before ordering a topper
A simple assessment can prevent buying the wrong product:
- sleep on another sound mattress for comparison if practical
- place the mattress temporarily on a known level, suitable base
- check whether the discomfort follows one visible dip
- inspect whether the mattress recovers when unloaded
- confirm the problem is surface firmness rather than loss of support
Do not place the mattress directly on the floor for long term use simply as a test, because ventilation and manufacturer guidance still matter.
When a topper is the right choice
A mattress topper cannot fix structural sagging. It can improve the surface feel of a mattress that is still flat, stable and supportive. Check the bed base, inspect the mattress and decide whether the problem is comfort or structure.
Where the mattress has a permanent dip or failed support, replacement is the honest solution. Where the mattress is sound but too firm or unresponsive, a correctly chosen topper can provide a useful and economical adjustment.
