Choose the Material, Not Just the Words “Closed Cell”

Closed cell foam describes the cell structure, not one single product. The right sheet depends on whether you need rigid polyethylene, coloured Plastazote or flexible rubber sealing foam.

Rigid closed-cell polyethylene foam

Closed Cell AFP30 and AFP45 Foam Sheets

Quick answer

Choose Closed Cell AFP30 when you need a lightweight 30 kg/m³ cross-linked polyethylene foam sheet for general lining, packing or sealing. Choose Closed Cell AFP45 when the same type of project needs a denser 45 kg/m³ grade with greater load-bearing performance.

Closed Cell AFP45 is not automatically the better option. Use its additional rigidity only where the load, insert design or finished assembly requires it. Both Closed Cell AFP30 and AFP45 are available from 2mm to 100mm with optional self-adhesive backing.

Flexible closed-cell rubber

EPDM Closed Cell Rubber Foam Sheets

Quick answer

Choose EPDM when the project needs flexible closed-cell rubber for sealing, gasketing, weather strips, anti-rattle pads or vibration control. It is a different material family from rigid polyethylene foam and is selected for flexibility and resistance to UV, ozone and weathering.

Do not choose EPDM from the words “closed cell” alone. Compare the required compression, movement, weather exposure, surface and any fire specification before ordering.

Practical buying guidance

How to Choose the Right Closed Cell Foam Sheet

Start with the job the foam must perform, then narrow the choice by rigidity, water exposure, appearance, thickness and fixing method. This avoids choosing by colour or density alone.

1. Define the main job

Decide whether the sheet needs to protect an item, line a case, create a seal, fill a gap, resist weather, support a load or form a visible finished insert. The required function should determine the material family.

2. Decide how rigid it should be

Closed Cell AFP30 and Closed Cell AFP45 are rigid cross-linked polyethylene grades, with AFP45 providing greater resistance under load. EPDM is flexible. Plastazote combines a stable closed-cell structure with useful fabrication properties.

3. Check water and weather exposure

Do not rely on the generic phrase closed cell. Closed Cell AFP30, Closed Cell AFP45 and Plastazote each have their own water-performance specification, while EPDM is selected for weather-resistant sealing. Match the named product to the actual environment.

4. Choose thickness from the finished space

A 2mm liner and a 50mm protective insert solve very different problems. Measure the usable space, required compression and clearances before selecting thickness. More foam is not automatically better if it prevents a case, panel or joint from fitting correctly.

5. Decide whether adhesive backing helps

Self-adhesive backing can simplify positioning on a suitable clean surface. It is useful for liners, seals and fixed pads, but unbacked foam is often better where the part needs to be removed, trial fitted, replaced or bonded using another specified system.

6. Confirm technical or regulated requirements

Fire, water, transport, healthcare and safety-critical projects require the exact product specification. Use the All Foam technical data sheets and contact us where suitability must be confirmed.

Material explained

What Is Closed Cell Foam?

Closed cell foam contains cells that are more fully enclosed than the interconnected cells found in open-cell foam. The result is generally lower water absorption and a more stable sheet, but the material still varies widely by polymer and grade.

Closed cell polyethylene foam

Polyethylene foam, often called PE foam, is the main rigid closed-cell family on this page. Closed Cell AFP30 and Closed Cell AFP45 are cross-linked PE grades. Plastazote LD33 is also cross-linked polyethylene but uses a nitrogen-expansion process and has a fine cell structure.

Closed cell rubber foam

EPDM is not polyethylene. It is a flexible synthetic rubber foam chosen for sealing, gasketing, weather resistance and movement. This is why a closed-cell rubber sheet can behave very differently from a rigid PE sheet even though both have a closed-cell structure.

Closed cell vs open cell foam

Open-cell foam allows more air movement through its structure and is commonly used for upholstery cushioning and acoustic absorption. Closed-cell foam is usually a better starting point for lining, sealing, lower water absorption and stable protective inserts. Read our open cell vs closed cell foam guide for a fuller comparison.

Water and outdoor exposure

Is Closed Cell Foam Waterproof or Weather Resistant?

The accurate answer depends on the exact material. This page separates the grades rather than applying one blanket claim to every closed-cell product.

Closed Cell AFP30

Closed Cell AFP30 is a waterproof, non-absorbent cross-linked polyethylene foam with a nominal density of 30 kg/m³. It is also WRAS approved for cold-water use. This makes AFP30 a strong choice for protective lining, packaging, sealing and suitable water-related applications, but drinking-water, marine and safety-critical projects should still be checked against the requirements of the complete installation.

Closed Cell AFP45

Closed Cell AFP45 is a denser 45 kg/m³ cross-linked polyethylene foam that provides greater load-bearing support than AFP30. Water absorption is specified at a maximum of 1% by volume, making AFP45 useful for demanding protective inserts, industrial lining, structural gaskets and suitable outdoor-related applications where a firmer closed-cell sheet is required.

Plastazote LD33

Plastazote LD33 combines negligible water absorption with a fine, uniform closed-cell structure and good fabrication qualities. It is a strong choice for presentation inserts, reusable case interiors, tool trays, displays and other projects where a clean finish and colour choice matter alongside technical suitability.

EPDM Closed Cell Rubber Foam

EPDM closed cell rubber foam is designed for applications where flexibility, sealing and environmental resistance matter. Its resistance to UV, ozone and weathering makes it well suited to door seals, weather strips, gaskets, anti-rattle pads and other exposed applications where a rigid polyethylene sheet would be less appropriate.

Safety-critical flotation

Some polyethylene grades are used in buoyancy and marine applications, but a generic closed-cell sheet should never be assumed suitable for a life-saving or regulated flotation product. Contact All Foam with the exact standard and application before ordering for safety-critical use.

Fixing options

Self-Adhesive Closed Cell Foam Sheets

Closed Cell AFP30, Closed Cell AFP45, Plastazote LD33 and EPDM are available with optional self-adhesive backing. Choose backing according to the surface and whether the foam needs to remain removable.

Choose self-adhesive backing when

The foam will be fixed to a suitable clean, dry and stable surface and the job benefits from quicker positioning. Common examples include liners, pads, seals and fixed protective sheets where repositioning is not expected.

Choose unbacked foam when

The sheet needs to be trial fitted, removed, replaced, reused or bonded using another specified adhesive system. Unbacked foam can also be easier to position in complex assemblies where alignment must be checked before permanent fixing.

Prepare the surface first

Self-adhesive backing cannot compensate for dust, grease, loose paint, moisture or an unsuitable substrate. Clean and prepare the receiving surface before removing the release liner and plan the sheet position before pressure is applied.

Thickness and sizing

Choosing Closed Cell Foam Sheet Thickness

The online range runs from thin 2mm Closed Cell AFP sheets to 100mm polyethylene options. Thickness changes clearance, compression depth and stiffness, so it should be chosen from the finished assembly rather than by copying another project.

Thin sheets for liners and seals

Thin closed-cell sheets are often used as liners, separators, anti-rattle pads, surface protection and gaskets. Measure the available gap and required compression carefully, especially where a door, lid or panel must still close correctly.

Medium thickness for inserts and protection

Medium-depth sheets can provide more material around tools, equipment and case contents. The correct depth depends on item weight, contact area, impact risk and how much usable room is available inside the case or container.

Deep sections for gap filling and support

Thicker AFP options can suit gap filling and deeper protective components, but a large thickness does not compensate for choosing the wrong material. Check how much the foam can compress and whether the load is spread over enough area.

Need a non-standard size?

Online products are sold as full rectangular sheets. For closed cell foam cut to size, blocks, profiles, repeated production or non-standard dimensions, contact All Foam with the grade, finished dimensions, quantity and intended use.

Common applications

What Are Closed Cell Foam Sheets Used For?

Closed-cell foam is used across packaging, industrial protection, sealing, fabrication and specialist projects. The examples below show useful starting points, not universal specifications.

Protective packaging and case inserts

Closed Cell AFP30, Closed Cell AFP45 and Plastazote can all suit protective packaging in different ways. Choose by item weight, required rigidity, appearance and repeated use. For a broader packaging comparison, see our Packaging Foam Sheets range.

Tool trays and workshop organisation

Plastazote is particularly useful where a clean, coloured, fabricated insert helps organise tools or components. Closed Cell AFP30 and AFP45 can also provide simple firm liners and separators where appearance is less important than protection.

Seals, gaskets and weather strips

EPDM is the first material to compare where a project needs flexible compression and resistance to UV, ozone or weathering. Closed Cell AFP30 or AFP45 may suit firmer gasket or seal stock where the complete specification supports polyethylene.

Marine and water-exposed projects

Closed Cell AFP30, Closed Cell AFP45 and Plastazote have low water uptake and can suit appropriate marine or water-exposed uses. Confirm the intended environment, loading and any regulatory requirement rather than choosing from buoyancy or waterproof wording alone.

Props, displays and creative fabrication

Plastazote LD33 is the strongest fit in this range when colour, finish and workability matter. It can be cut, formed and fabricated for props, presentation pieces and display projects where a fine-cell closed-cell material is useful.

Vibration and anti-rattle pads

EPDM is useful for flexible anti-rattle and vibration-control pads. Closed Cell AFP30 and Closed Cell AFP45 can also suit anti-vibration applications where a rigid polyethylene foam is appropriate, but the load, movement and required compression should be checked before substituting one material for another.

Important specification checks

Fire Performance and Sound Control

Two common mistakes are assuming that closed cell means fire retardant and treating a closed-cell sheet as a complete soundproofing product. Both depend on the exact material and finished construction.

Closed cell does not mean fire retardant

Cell structure and fire performance are separate properties. Closed Cell AFP30 and Closed Cell AFP45 are not offered as fire-retardant grades by All Foam. Where a project has a fire requirement, check the technical specification for the exact product and confirm the required classification before ordering.

Closed cell foam is not room soundproofing

Closed-cell sheets can be useful for sealing, vibration control or insulation within a designed assembly, but they are not a complete answer for sound transmission through walls, floors or ceilings. If the goal is reducing room reflections and reverberation, compare our Class 0 Acoustic Foam Sheets and standard acoustic foam range.

Use the technical data sheet

Density, compression, water behaviour, weather resistance and fire information should be checked on the exact grade. Browse the All Foam data sheet library or contact the team where a specification must be confirmed for a commercial or regulated project.

Helpful answers

Closed Cell Foam Sheet FAQs

Clear answers about polyethylene foam, Plastazote, EPDM, water resistance, self-adhesive backing, packaging, sound control and fire requirements.

Ask the All Foam Team
What is closed cell foam?

Closed cell foam contains cells that are more fully sealed from one another than open cell foam. This usually gives the material lower water absorption and a more stable structure. Closed cell is a material category rather than one fixed specification, so AFP polyethylene, Plastazote and EPDM still need to be compared by grade, rigidity, thickness and intended use.

What is polyethylene foam or PE foam?

Polyethylene foam, often shortened to PE foam, is a closed-cell foam made from polyethylene. The All Foam closed-cell range includes Closed Cell AFP30 and Closed Cell AFP45 cross-linked polyethylene foam, plus nitrogen-expanded cross-linked Plastazote LD33. EPDM is a separate closed-cell synthetic rubber option for flexible sealing and weather-resistant applications.

Is closed cell foam waterproof?

Water behaviour depends on the exact grade. Closed Cell AFP30 is waterproof and non-absorbent, Closed Cell AFP45 has maximum water absorption of 1% by volume, Plastazote LD33 has negligible water absorption and EPDM is intended for weather-resistant sealing applications. Compare the exact product specification rather than assuming every closed-cell foam behaves in the same way.

What is the difference between Closed Cell AFP30 and Closed Cell AFP45 foam?

Closed Cell AFP30 has a nominal density of 30 kg/m³ and is the lighter general-purpose cross-linked polyethylene grade. Closed Cell AFP45 has a nominal density of 45 kg/m³ and greater compression resistance, so it is selected when the application needs more rigid load-bearing support. Both are available in 2mm to 100mm thicknesses with optional self-adhesive backing.

What is Plastazote LD33 used for?

Plastazote LD33 is useful where a clean finish, colour choice and workability matter as well as a closed-cell structure. Typical applications include presentation packaging, reusable case inserts, shadow boards, props, displays and specialist fabrication. All Foam offers nine colours and thicknesses from 3mm to 50mm.

What is EPDM closed cell foam used for?

EPDM is a flexible closed-cell synthetic rubber rather than a rigid polyethylene foam. It is commonly selected for gaskets, door seals, weather strips, anti-rattle pads, cushioning and anti-vibration applications where flexibility and resistance to UV, ozone and weathering are useful.

Can closed cell foam sheets have self-adhesive backing?

Closed Cell AFP30, Closed Cell AFP45, Plastazote LD33 and EPDM can be ordered with or without self-adhesive backing from All Foam. Adhesive backing should only be applied to a clean, dry and suitable surface.

Can I order closed cell foam cut to size?

The products on this page are priced online as full sheets. If you need closed cell foam cut to size, foam blocks, profiles or non-standard dimensions, contact All Foam with the grade, finished dimensions, quantity and application so the requirement can be reviewed.

Is closed cell foam suitable for packaging inserts?

Yes, suitable closed-cell grades are widely used for reusable case inserts, liners, separators and protective packaging. Closed Cell AFP30 is a good starting point for lightweight rigid protection, Closed Cell AFP45 offers more support and Plastazote suits presentation and detailed fabrication. The correct thickness still depends on item weight, geometry and journey conditions.

Is closed cell foam good for soundproofing?

Closed cell foam should not be treated as a complete room soundproofing solution. Some closed-cell materials can be useful for sealing, vibration control or insulation within a wider assembly, but open-cell acoustic foam is the better All Foam product family for reducing reflections, echo and reverberation inside a room or enclosure.

Is all closed cell foam fire retardant?

No. Closed cell describes the cell structure, not fire performance. Closed Cell AFP30 and Closed Cell AFP45 are not offered as fire-retardant grades by All Foam. For Plastazote, EPDM or any application with a fire requirement, check the technical specification for the exact product and contact All Foam if a specific classification is required.
