Class 0 acoustic foam sheets should be installed only after the treatment area, substrate, sheet layout and project requirements have been checked. The current All Foam AFPCLS0 sheets are supplied unbacked, so the fixing method is selected separately to suit the surface and finished application.
That separation is useful because the correct way to retain acoustic foam can differ between a wall, equipment enclosure, removable panel and other specification-led installation. The foam product, fixing system and substrate all need to work together.
Confirm the product specification first
Before planning the installation, make sure AFPCLS0 is the correct material for the project.
The All Foam technical data sheet states Class 0 performance to BS 476 Parts 6 and 7. That information applies to the foam product itself. It does not automatically prove that an entire wall, ceiling, enclosure or finished assembly meets a particular building, fire or insurance requirement.
Where a drawing, contractor, responsible person or project specification names a standard, compare the current technical data with that requirement before ordering or fitting the foam.

Choose the sheet size and thickness before laying out the area
The current AFPCLS0 range is supplied as flat sheets in 100cm x 100cm and 200cm x 100cm sizes. Available thicknesses are 6mm, 12mm, 25mm and 50mm.
Choose the treatment depth before calculating quantities because thickness affects clearances around equipment, doors, covers, panels and building services. A deeper sheet may be suitable acoustically but still be impractical if it interferes with access or airflow.
Measure the usable treatment area rather than relying only on the nominal dimensions of a wall or enclosure. Mark anything that interrupts the surface, including access panels, vents, electrical boxes, fasteners, controls, handles and moving components.
Plan the sheet layout before cutting
A simple drawing can save material and make the finished installation neater.
Mark the position of each full sheet and identify where cut pieces will be required. Decide whether joints should follow a straight reference line, whether edges need to remain clear of doors or panels, and whether individual sections may need to be removed later for maintenance.
For an equipment enclosure, check how the enclosure opens and how technicians reach service points. For a room treatment, check the position of sockets, detectors, vents, lighting and other services before covering any surface.
Do not stretch foam to close a gap. Measure and cut the correct piece instead.
Check the substrate
The receiving surface needs to be suitable for the fixing system chosen for the project.
Look for loose paint, powdery surfaces, oil, dust, moisture, unstable coatings or heavy texture. A fixing system cannot perform reliably if it is attached to a surface that is itself failing.
Where the substrate is valuable, coated or unusual, check compatibility before permanent installation. A specialist installer may be appropriate where removal damage, fire performance, overhead fixing or other project requirements matter.
Select the fixing method separately
All Foam supplies the current AFPCLS0 sheets without factory-applied self-adhesive backing. The installer can therefore select a retention method around the substrate and application instead of being limited to one factory backing system.
Depending on the project, the foam may be bonded with a compatible separately specified system, retained mechanically, fitted into a panel or incorporated into another approved construction. The correct choice depends on the foam, substrate, orientation, temperature, vibration, access requirements and project specification.
Do not assume that a general-purpose glue is suitable. If bonding is planned, confirm that the chosen product is compatible with both the foam and the receiving surface and follow the fixing manufacturer's instructions.
Walls and overhead locations need different thinking
A vertical wall is not the same installation as an overhead surface.
Gravity, long-term load, surface condition and access all become more important overhead. In public or commercial spaces, the fixing method may also form part of a wider fire-safety or building specification.
Do not rely on an installation method simply because it worked on a wall. Where foam is fitted overhead, use the fixing system required by the project and obtain appropriate professional advice if the installation is outside a straightforward low-risk application.
Machinery and equipment enclosures need clearance checks
Acoustic treatment inside machinery or equipment housings needs more than an area calculation.
Check heat sources, ventilation paths, fans, moving parts, service access and electrical components. The foam must not obstruct airflow or make maintenance unsafe.

Keep vents, sensors and access points clear
Acoustic foam is not a reason to cover a component that the room or equipment needs to operate safely.
Keep ventilation openings, sensors, detectors, switches, service panels, drainage routes and moving components clear unless the project design specifically states otherwise.
In a commercial building, also consider how the treatment interacts with lighting, sprinklers, signage and other services. The acoustic layout should work around those systems rather than being installed first and corrected afterwards.
Cut carefully and check each piece before fixing
Use a suitable cutting method for the foam thickness and work on a stable surface. Measure twice, mark clearly and check the orientation before making the final cut.
For irregular shapes, a template can help. Dry fit the piece before permanent fixing, especially around corners, service openings and enclosure doors.
A neat dry fit also makes it easier to see whether the planned joint lines and clearances are practical before the installation becomes permanent.
Do not confuse acoustic treatment with soundproofing
Class 0 acoustic foam is an absorptive treatment. It can help reduce reflections and reverberation where sound reaches the open-cell material.
It does not by itself create a complete sound barrier through walls, floors, ceilings or doors. If the main problem is noise transmission between spaces, the project may need changes to mass, isolation, sealing and construction as well as internal acoustic treatment.

Inspect the finished installation
Once the foam has been fitted, inspect the complete treatment area rather than only the individual sheets.
Check that joints are neat, access points remain usable, vents are clear, cut edges are stable and the foam is not being compressed or stretched unnecessarily. Confirm that the fixing system is performing as intended and that no part of the substrate has lifted or failed.

A good installation begins with planning
The most useful installation step happens before the foam is permanently fixed.
Confirm the correct product, choose the treatment depth, measure the area, plan the layout, inspect the substrate and select a fixing method that is compatible with the complete application. Those checks reduce waste and make it much easier to achieve a clean, maintainable installation.
