Learn when closed cell polyethylene foam can suit gaskets, seals, spacers and anti-rattle pads, plus how to compare AFP30 and AFP45 safely.

Closed cell foam sheets can be useful for firm gaskets, seals, spacers and anti-rattle pads where polyethylene is compatible with the job. The important point is that "closed cell" describes the foam structure, not a universal sealing specification. A gasket around a light access panel has very different requirements from a pressure seal, chemical seal or safety-critical joint.

What does a foam gasket actually do?

A gasket sits between two surfaces and helps manage the gap between them. Depending on the assembly, it may reduce drafts, limit dust entry, cushion contact, reduce rattling, separate surfaces or help create a more continuous closure.

The foam normally needs to compress enough to maintain contact without being crushed so heavily that the joint becomes difficult to close or the material loses useful recovery.

Before choosing material, check:

  • the width and depth of the gap
  • whether the surfaces are flat or uneven
  • how often the joint opens and closes
  • how much compression is available
  • whether the foam carries any load
  • whether water, chemicals or cleaning products are present
  • whether the application has a pressure, fire or regulatory requirement
  • how the gasket will be retained

A simple enclosure door may only need a firm compressible strip. A technical fluid or gas seal needs much more specific material data.

Why closed cell structure can help

Closed cell foam contains cells that are more fully enclosed than the interconnected cells in open cell polyurethane foam. This generally gives the material lower water absorption and a more stable sheet structure.

Low water uptake should not be confused with a guarantee that the finished joint is waterproof. Water can pass around a gasket through gaps, screw holes, corners or an unsuitable closure design.

AFP30 for lighter gasket and spacer work

AFP30 is a cross-linked polyethylene foam with a nominal density of 30 kg/m³. All Foam describes it as waterproof and non-absorbent, and it is the lighter of the two current online closed cell grades.

AFP30 is a sensible grade to compare where the project needs a firm but relatively lightweight PE foam strip, spacer or pad. Possible uses include access-panel gasket strips, anti-rattle pads, separators, enclosure lining and light-duty sealing where polyethylene is compatible.

AFP30 should not be selected solely because a project uses the word seal. If the joint needs greater resistance under load, a denser grade may be more appropriate.

AFP45 for firmer structural gasket stock

AFP45 is not automatically better. A firmer grade can be less suitable if the joint needs greater conformity around uneven surfaces. Choose from the way the joint actually works.

How much should a foam gasket compress?

There is no single compression percentage that is correct for every foam gasket.

Too little compression can leave gaps. Too much can make a door or panel difficult to close and may place unnecessary stress on the foam or hardware. The correct amount depends on the material, thickness, gasket shape, surface condition, closing force and required performance.

For ordinary non-critical work, measure the real gap in several places. Do not assume a fabricated frame, cabinet or older door is perfectly parallel. If the smallest and largest gaps differ substantially, the joint may need a different gasket profile or a more conformable material rather than simply a thicker sheet.

Choosing foam thickness for a gasket

Thickness should be based on the available gap and the amount of compression the joint can provide.

A gasket thinner than the gap may not maintain contact. A gasket much thicker than the gap may be excessively compressed. Check the clearance around the whole closure, including near hinges and catches, and note whether the foam sits in a recess or directly on a flat surface.

Thin closed cell sheets can suit defined gasket strips, anti-rattle pads and separators. Thicker sheets may suit larger spacers where more depth is genuinely needed. Test a small piece before cutting a complete gasket where practical.

Polyethylene foam or EPDM for a seal?

AFP30 and AFP45 are cross-linked polyethylene foams. They are lightweight, structured materials, with AFP45 providing greater rigidity than AFP30.

EPDM is a different material family. It is a closed-cell synthetic rubber foam and is more relevant where flexibility, ozone resistance, UV resistance and weathering performance are central to the job. Neither material is universally better. Choose polyethylene when a firm, lightweight closed cell sheet suits the joint. Compare EPDM when a more rubber-like weather-resistant seal is required.

For pressure vessels, fuels, oils, aggressive chemicals, hot process equipment or safety-critical systems, a general foam-sheet guide is not sufficient. Confirm material compatibility and engineering requirements before specifying a gasket.

Gaskets for enclosures and access panels

A common use for closed cell gasket stock is around access panels, cabinet doors and equipment covers. The foam can help reduce hard contact, take up small tolerances, reduce rattling or limit simple dust paths.

Before fitting, check that the gasket does not interfere with latches, hinges, ventilation or access requirements.

If an enclosure has a formal ingress-protection rating or other certification, adding or replacing gasket material can affect that rating. Do not assume a new foam strip automatically preserves or creates certified enclosure performance.

Should gasket foam have adhesive backing?

Straight strips can be marked with a ruler and cut using a sharp suitable blade on a safe cutting surface. For shaped gaskets, make a template where accuracy matters, mark holes before cutting the outer edge and leave enough material around fixing points.
