A worn sofa-bed mattress can make an otherwise useful guest bed uncomfortable. The All Foam custom mattress builder can make rectangular foam mattresses to non-standard dimensions, but a sofa or fold-out mechanism must be checked carefully before any replacement is ordered.
The mattress has to fit the sleeping platform when open and work with the furniture when it closes. That means thickness, flexibility, weight, frame clearances and support matter just as much as width and length.
Start with the sofa-bed manufacturer's instructions
Before measuring foam, identify the sofa-bed model if possible and look for the manufacturer's mattress specification.
Check for:
- required mattress width and length
- maximum mattress thickness
- mattress type restrictions
- weight limits
- whether the mattress stays on the mechanism when folded
- whether straps, retainers or covers are part of the design
A custom mattress should not be used to override the furniture manufacturer's limits.
If the original specification cannot be found, inspect the mechanism carefully and contact the furniture manufacturer where possible.
Sofa beds use different folding mechanisms
The phrase sofa bed covers several different designs.
Some pull out into a flat platform. Others use two or three folding sections. Some store the mattress inside the sofa, while others use seat cushions to create part of the sleeping surface.
These differences affect whether a replacement foam mattress is suitable and how thick it can be.
Do not copy a recommendation from another sofa bed simply because both are described as doubles.
Measure the sleeping platform when fully open
Open the sofa bed completely and make sure every support section is locked into its normal sleeping position.
Measure the usable mattress area rather than the outside width of the sofa.
Record:
- finished mattress width
- finished mattress length
- maximum available thickness
- width and length at several points if the frame varies
- any retaining bars or straps
- hinges or raised joints
For a rectangular platform, the online builder can accept the finished width and length in centimetres.
Our non-standard mattress sizes guide explains why the frame measurement should be checked instead of relying on labels such as small double or guest double.
Do not assume the old mattress is still the right size
An old sofa-bed mattress may have compressed at folds, stretched inside its cover or changed shape after years of storage.
Measure the actual platform first, then compare it with the old mattress.
If the old mattress was difficult to close, bulged at the hinges or left large gaps when open, copying it exactly may reproduce the same problem.
Thickness is often the critical measurement
A sofa bed may have far less depth available than a normal bed frame.
The mattress has to clear the mechanism when folded, and the finished sofa must still close without excessive force.
The All Foam custom builder accepts whole-inch thicknesses from 1 to 10 inches for rectangular mattresses, but that does not mean every thickness is appropriate for every folding bed.
The furniture manufacturer determines the permitted mattress depth.
Check the mechanism in both positions
Measure with the bed fully open, then inspect it again while closing slowly.
Look at where the mattress will:
- bend
- pass between metal rails
- sit beside hinges
- compress against the sofa back
- clear support bars
- be retained during storage
Do not put hands close to moving hinges while checking the mechanism. If access is unsafe, use the manufacturer's drawings or ask a competent person to inspect it.
A custom foam mattress is not automatically a folding mattress
Foam is flexible, but a complete mattress construction should not automatically be assumed suitable for repeated sharp folding.
A one-piece rectangular mattress designed for a flat bed base can behave differently when repeatedly folded through a mechanism.
If the sofa bed stores the mattress in a tight fold, contact All Foam before ordering. Explain the number of folds, required thickness and how the mattress sits when closed.
The team can then advise whether the proposed construction is appropriate to discuss further rather than relying on the online builder alone.
When a one-layer foam construction may be simpler
Custom mattresses below 4 inches use one foam layer in the All Foam builder.
For some shallow guest-bed applications, a simple one-layer construction can reduce complexity. The available foam grade still needs to suit the required feel and support.
A thin mattress will also be influenced more strongly by the sofa-bed base beneath it. A mesh, slatted or articulated support can feel different from a solid platform.
Do not choose the thinnest option simply to make the mechanism easier to close if it does not provide an appropriate sleeping surface.
Two-layer constructions need enough total depth
From 4 to 7 inches, the custom builder allows one or two layers.
A two-layer mattress combines a support base with an upper comfort layer. The support base normally remains thicker than the upper layer, with the permitted 4-inch 2 plus 2 construction as the specific balanced exception.
Memory foam is available only as the top layer of a suitable two or three layer build.
Before considering a layered mattress for a sofa bed, check that the mechanism allows the total depth and that repeated folding is appropriate for the proposed construction.
Deeper three-layer mattresses are rarely a decision to make from comfort alone
At 8 to 10 inches, the builder can offer up to three layers.
That depth is common in conventional bed applications but may exceed the clearance available inside many folding sofa-bed mechanisms.
Never assume a deeper construction is better for a fold-out bed. Follow the mechanism specification first.
Our foam mattress thickness guide explains how depth affects ordinary foam mattress construction, but a sofa bed adds mechanical restrictions that must be considered separately.
Check the base under the mattress
Open sofa beds can use:
- sprung mesh
- fabric decks
- timber slats
- metal grids
- linked folding panels
Inspect the base for damage, sagging and protruding fittings.
A new foam mattress cannot correct a stretched support deck or broken frame. Repair the mechanism before measuring if the sleeping surface is not in its normal position.
Measure the sofa-bed opening as well as the mattress space
The mattress may fit perfectly when the bed is open but interfere with closing if its edges catch the mechanism.
Check side clearances and the path the mattress follows during folding.
If the replacement needs rounded corners, cut-outs or another non-rectangular shape, the online builder is not the correct ordering route. Shaped mattresses require a template, so contact All Foam first.
Our custom mattress template guide explains what a full-size shaped template should show.
Should you use memory foam on a sofa bed?
Memory foam is available in the All Foam builder only as the top comfort layer of a suitable two or three layer mattress.
Whether that construction is appropriate for a particular sofa bed depends on the mechanism, depth and folding requirement.
Do not order memory foam as a single-layer mattress or use it as the support base. If the mattress must fold tightly for storage, discuss the application before ordering.
Our memory foam vs Reflex foam guide explains how those comfort materials respond differently in normal mattress constructions.
Quick answers about custom sofa-bed mattresses
Can All Foam make a custom-size sofa-bed mattress?
The online builder can make rectangular foam mattresses to custom dimensions. A sofa-bed mechanism adds folding and clearance requirements, so check the furniture specification and contact All Foam if the mattress folds inside the mechanism.
How do I measure a replacement sofa-bed mattress?
Open the bed fully and measure the usable sleeping platform. Record finished width, length and the maximum mattress thickness permitted by the sofa-bed manufacturer.
Can I make the replacement mattress thicker than the original?
Only if the furniture manufacturer permits the additional depth. A thicker mattress can prevent the sofa bed from closing or interfere with the mechanism.
Is a foam mattress suitable for every folding sofa bed?
No universal answer applies. Folding geometry, permitted thickness, support deck and storage position vary. Check the mechanism instructions and discuss tight-fold applications before ordering.
What if the sofa-bed mattress has shaped corners?
The online builder is for rectangles. A shaped mattress requires a full-size template and discussion with All Foam before production.
Sofa-bed mattress ordering checklist
Before ordering, confirm:
- the sofa-bed make and model has been checked where possible
- the mechanism is working correctly
- width and length were measured from the open sleeping platform
- the maximum permitted mattress thickness is known
- closing clearance has been checked
- the proposed mattress does not conflict with retaining straps or hinges
- the underlying support deck is in good condition
- any repeated folding requirement has been explained to All Foam
- shaped corners or cut-outs are not being forced through the rectangular builder
- the selected foam construction is appropriate for the available depth
- bedding storage has been considered separately
A replacement custom mattress can be a practical way to keep a useful sofa bed in service, but the furniture mechanism must set the limits. Start with the frame specification, measure the open platform accurately and use the custom mattress builder only when the required mattress is a compatible rectangular construction.
