Antique beds, vintage frames and handmade bedsteads often do not match modern UK mattress sizes. A frame may be narrower than a Double, longer than a Single or somewhere between recognised sizes.
A custom mattress for an antique bed solves the fit problem by using the finished internal width and length rather than a size label. The key is to measure the actual frame accurately and check whether the sleeping area is rectangular.
Start with exact measurements
Measure the internal frame in several places and order from the smallest reliable width and length. Check the available depth, bed base and room access before choosing the construction. Use the custom builder only for a rectangular mattress and contact All Foam if the frame has curves or cut outs.
Do not rely on the bed name
Terms such as three quarter bed, old double, French bed and small double are not precise enough for a made to measure order.
Two frames described with the same name can differ by several centimetres. Measure the bed itself and record the dimensions as width × length.

Measure inside the frame
Measure the usable internal sleeping space at:
- the head
- the middle
- the foot
- both long sides
Older frames may not be perfectly square. If the mattress sits within a recess, use a dimension that allows it to fit without being forced or bowed.
Check whether side rails lean inward and whether decorative posts or brackets reduce the available space.
Check for cut outs and rounded corners

A full size template may be required. Do not approximate a shaped frame as a rectangle unless the resulting gaps and compression are acceptable.
Measure the available depth
Antique frames can have deep side rails or a low headboard. Choose a mattress depth that fits the design and gives the desired sleeping height.
The custom builder accepts whole inch thicknesses from 1 to 10 for rectangular sizes. For an everyday bed, the support requirement matters as much as appearance. A very shallow pad may fit the frame but not provide the construction expected from a full mattress.
Consider the bed base
Inspect the support system before ordering:
- timber slats
- woven or sprung base
- solid platform
- old wire support
- replacement boards
Repair broken, bowed or unstable parts. A custom mattress cannot correct a failing antique frame.
Wide gaps may need suitable support changes. Keep ventilation in mind when adding boards or platforms.
Choose one, two or three layers
The number of layers depends on thickness:
- 1 to 3 inches: one layer
- 4 to 7 inches: one or two layers
- 8 to 10 inches: one, two or three layers
The support base normally forms most of the thickness in layered builds. The balanced 4 inch 2 plus 2 construction is the specific exception.
A two layer mattress with a deeper support base and an upper comfort layer is often the clearest choice for a full sleeping mattress. Three layers are useful only when the middle layer has a defined purpose.
Choose the support foam
The base can use medium, high, severe very firm or Reflex grades depending on the required feel.
- Medium provides balanced support.
- High gives a firmer base.
- Severe Very Firm is for specialist extra firm requirements.
- Reflex Medium and Reflex Firm give resilient quicker recovery.
Memory foam is usually more suitable near the top than as the whole support base.
Choose the comfort layer
Memory foam adds slower contouring. Reflex Medium adds resilient medium comfort. Reflex Firm adds a firmer quicker recovery upper layer.

Cover or no cover?
Select no cover when the custom foam must fit an existing suitable mattress cover and you have measured the internal cover size correctly.
Select a made to measure cover when you need a finished mattress. The cover is produced for the chosen dimensions and adds 2 to 3 working days to the manufacturing and dispatch time.

Check access to the room
Measure:
- stair turns
- narrow doors
- low ceilings
- four poster openings
- landings and corridors
A custom mattress that fits the bed still needs to reach it. Foam can flex, but a thick mattress should not be forced through an opening in a way that damages the cover or layers.
Allow for bedding
Non standard mattresses may need custom fitted sheets or deep pocket bedding. Check the finished depth and dimensions before ordering bedding.
A standard sheet label may not fit an antique frame even when the mattress is close to a named size.
Review the builder summary
Before adding the custom mattress to the basket, confirm:
- custom rectangular size is selected
- width and length are correct
- thickness is correct
- layer count and split are correct
- each foam grade is correct
- cover selection is correct
- price and dispatch information are understood

Common non standard antique dimensions
Many older frames sit between modern sizes. Examples include a frame wider than a Single but narrower than a Double, or a bed with the width of a standard size but a shorter or longer sleeping length.
These examples are reasons to measure, not dimensions to copy. The frame may have been repaired, altered or handmade, and its current internal space is the only dependable basis for the order.
Prepare a clear drawing
For a rectangular mattress, write:
- finished width
- finished length
- total thickness
- head and foot orientation
- whether the dimensions include the cover
For a shaped mattress, add every cut out and curve to a labelled drawing, then ask whether a full size template is required. Photographs help explain the frame, but perspective can distort measurements and should not replace a template.
Check the fit before removing the old mattress
Keep the existing mattress until the dimensions and access route have been checked. It can show how the frame accommodates corners, side rails and bedding.
Do not assume a compressed old mattress proves the correct new size. Compare it with the frame and note any gaps or areas where it has been forced.
Warranty and measurement responsibility
A made to measure mattress is manufactured from the submitted dimensions. Review every number before ordering because a custom item made correctly to incorrect measurements may not fit.
Keep a copy of the final builder summary and the measurements used. The mattress includes the stated All Foam warranty subject to its terms, but measurement accuracy remains essential for a custom fit.
Replacing or adapting the bed base
If the original support is unsuitable, use a repair that respects the frame and provides even mattress support. Avoid temporary loose boards that can move, trap moisture or damage antique components.
For valuable furniture, ask a competent furniture restorer or bed specialist before drilling, cutting or permanently altering the frame.
