Every premium All Foam memory foam mattress is supplied with a premium navy border and diamond quilted zip-off cover. A removable cover can make inspection and care easier, but the zip should not be confused with permission to machine wash the cover.
The buying question is whether a removable cover is more practical for your home than a fixed cover, and whether the exact cover can be cared for safely. A zip-off design has benefits, but also requires careful handling and does not replace a mattress protector.
Quick answer
A removable mattress cover can make surface care, inspection and refitting easier, but removable does not automatically mean machine washable. Always follow the care label for the exact cover. Keep the foam dry, do not use the mattress without the cover unless the product instructions specifically allow it, and use a suitable protector for routine spill protection.
What does a removable mattress cover actually mean?
A removable cover is an outer mattress cover designed with a zip or other opening so it can be taken away from the foam core.
On the current All Foam premium range, the cover is described as a diamond quilted zip-off cover.
This can be useful because the cover and the foam underneath can be inspected separately. It also makes it easier to access the surface of the foam if the product needs checking.
However, the cover remains part of the mattress construction. It should be refitted correctly after any permitted cleaning or inspection.
Removable does not automatically mean washable
This is the most important distinction.
A zip only tells you that the cover can be removed. It does not tell you the correct washing temperature, whether the fabric can be machine washed, whether it should be dry cleaned or whether it is intended for spot cleaning only.
Quilting, internal layers, fabric finishes and the zip itself can all affect care instructions.
Before washing a mattress cover, check the sewn-in care label or the instructions supplied with the mattress.
If the cleaning method is unclear, contact All Foam before putting the cover into a washing machine or tumble dryer.
For step-by-step stain and fabric-care considerations, use the memory foam mattress cleaning guide. This article focuses on choosing and using a removable-cover design rather than repeating the cleaning instructions.
Removable versus fixed covers: what changes?
A zip-off cover gives access to the outer fabric separately from the foam core. That can be useful when checking where a mark or odour is coming from, or when a care label permits the cover to be cleaned away from the mattress. The cover still needs to be handled and refitted correctly.
A fixed cover normally remains on the mattress. There is no cover to remove or refit, which may suit someone who prefers minimal handling, but there is also less direct access for inspecting the underlying foam. Cleaning options depend on the cover material and the manufacturer's instructions.
Neither construction is automatically more hygienic or durable. What matters is the fabric specification, protection used, care instructions and how the mattress is maintained.
When is a zip-off cover particularly useful?
It may be worth prioritising when:
- you want to inspect the fabric and foam separately after a minor incident
- the care label permits cover removal for a cleaning process
- you can safely handle and refit the cover without forcing the zip
- you value access to the foam surface for checking marks or moisture
Before removing any cover, read the care information for the particular mattress. A removable design is a feature, not permission to machine wash or use the exposed foam as a sleeping surface.
If you only want to deal with everyday spills and bedding marks, a separate washable mattress protector may be simpler than repeatedly removing a large cover.
A mattress protector is still worth considering
A removable cover is not the same thing as a mattress protector.
A protector sits above the mattress and is intended to take routine exposure from bedding use, minor spills and everyday marks.
Because a protector is easier to remove regularly, it can reduce the need to clean the mattress cover itself.
Choose a protector that fits the mattress depth correctly and follow the protector's own washing instructions.
Be aware that thick or waterproof protectors can change the surface feel and perceived warmth of a memory foam mattress. This does not mean they should be avoided. It means they are part of the complete sleep setup.
Keep the foam core dry
Memory foam should not be soaked.
If the cover is removed, take care not to expose the foam unnecessarily to water, cleaning solution or strong direct heat.
If a spill reaches the foam, use a cautious cleaning method and allow the material to dry fully before refitting the cover.
Do not trap moisture inside the mattress by replacing the cover over damp foam.
Moisture can also come from the room or the bed base rather than from a spill, so inspect underneath the mattress periodically as part of normal care.
Refit the cover carefully
A mattress cover should be completely dry before it is put back onto the foam.
When refitting:
- position the cover evenly before closing the zip
- avoid forcing the zip around a compressed corner
- keep the foam aligned inside the cover
- check that the cover is not twisted
- make sure the finished mattress sits flat on the bed base
If the foam has been compressed during handling, allow it to settle into position rather than pulling aggressively on the zip.
A damaged zip or incorrectly fitted cover can create unnecessary tension around the mattress edge.
The cover changes the immediate surface feel
The foam layers determine the main mattress construction, but the cover is the surface you actually lie above.
Fabric, quilting and surface padding can change the immediate touch and feel of the mattress even when the foam underneath is unchanged.
This is why comparing mattresses only by the internal foam specification can miss part of the finished product.
The current All Foam premium range uses the same general premium navy border and diamond quilted zip-off cover treatment across the three models, while the internal layer builds create the main differences in firmness and depth.
A removable cover does not repair a worn mattress
Being able to remove or replace a cover does not solve structural problems inside the mattress.
If the foam has developed a persistent sag, the bed base is damaged or the support layer has failed, cleaning or replacing the outer cover will not restore the original construction.
The memory foam body impressions vs sagging guide explains how to distinguish a surface impression from a deeper support problem.
If the mattress is structurally sound and only the cover has a care issue, the situation is different.
Check the cover when comparing mattress depth
A mattress depth is normally quoted as the finished product depth, and the cover can be part of that measurement.
For example, Luxury Deep Sleeper is listed at 25cm total depth including the cover.
This matters when choosing fitted sheets, checking bed height or comparing the finished mattress with the frame.
Do not add the cover depth a second time if the product specification already gives the complete finished measurement.
What cover does All Foam supply?
The current All Foam premium mattresses are described with a navy border and diamond quilted zip-off cover. The cover treatment is shared across Deep Sleeper Comfort, Deep Sleeper Back Care and Luxury Deep Sleeper; their principal differences are the foam layer constructions and finished depths.
The stated finished depths are 20cm for Deep Sleeper Comfort, 22.5cm for Deep Sleeper Back Care and 25cm for Luxury Deep Sleeper (including the cover). These figures are for comparing fit and bedding, not instructions to strip off the cover.
If you need to know whether a particular cleaning cycle is approved for the supplied fabric, check the sewn-in label or ask All Foam for that model's specific care details before cleaning.
Cover care and foam care are separate
The outer fabric and the foam core are different materials and should not be treated with the same cleaning method.
A care label may permit a particular process for the cover that would be unsuitable for the foam itself.
For example, even if a cover can be cleaned using water according to its care label, that does not mean the memory foam core should be washed in the same way.
Keep the distinction clear:
Cover: follow the exact fabric care instructions.
Foam core: keep dry, avoid soaking and use cautious spot treatment only where appropriate.
What should you check before buying?
When a removable cover matters to you, check:
- whether the mattress actually has a zip-off cover
- whether the cover-care instructions are available
- whether you need a separate mattress protector
- the finished mattress depth with the cover fitted
- how easy the mattress will be to handle if the cover needs removing
- whether the mattress construction itself suits your preferred firmness and comfort
The cover should support the buying decision, not replace the more important comparison of the foam layers underneath.
A removable cover is useful when the care instructions are clear
A zip-off cover can be a useful feature on a memory foam mattress if you value access for inspection and can follow the correct handling instructions. A fixed cover may be simpler to leave undisturbed. Neither guarantees washability or a particular level of comfort.
Use the care label, keep the foam dry, refit the cover carefully and consider a suitable protector for everyday use. Then compare the mattress itself by its memory foam layer, support base, total depth and finished firmness. Our UK-made memory foam mattress buying guide gives a broader specification checklist.
