Fire Retardant Foam Sheets: What to Check Before Ordering

Choose fire retardant foam by its intended use, stated test information and supporting data sheet rather than relying on a general product label.

Checklist for choosing fire retardant foam sheets

Choosing fire retardant foam sheets starts with the intended application, not with a single badge or general description. Foam used inside domestic furniture can have different stated fire performance from foam intended for acoustic treatment, electronic packaging, sealing or a regulated commercial installation. A material described as fire retardant is not automatically suitable for every environment, and Class 0 acoustic foam should not be treated as another name for ordinary upholstery foam. Before ordering, identify where the foam will be used, what the finished product must do, which information must be documented and whether a particular test or classification has been specified. Then compare the product page with the relevant technical document and ask for confirmation when the application is safety critical.

Fire retardant is not one universal specification

The phrase fire retardant tells you that a product has stated fire performance, but it does not tell you the complete test method, application or level of performance. Two products can both carry fire related wording while being designed for very different jobs.

An upholstery grade may be manufactured to meet requirements stated for furniture and furnishings. An acoustic product may be described against a surface spread or building related classification. A specialist packaging product may be listed as fire retardant but intended for electronic components rather than seating. A closed cell rubber may also be described as fire retardant while offering properties that are completely different from flexible upholstery foam.

For that reason, never select foam from the words fire retardant alone. Read the complete product description, open the product data sheet and compare the stated information with the needs of the finished project. Define the finished application first

The first question is not which foam looks suitable. The first question is what the finished item will be.

A replacement sofa cushion needs a foam grade intended for seating and furniture use. A wall panel in a studio needs acoustic material selected for sound treatment. A protective insert for electronic equipment needs packaging foam with the correct handling properties. A gasket needs a closed cell material chosen for sealing. These uses are not interchangeable, even when two products have a fire related description.

Write down the location, use and construction before comparing products. Record whether the foam will be enclosed inside furniture, exposed as an acoustic surface, fitted near electrical equipment, used in a vehicle, installed in a public building or placed inside packaging. Note whether the customer, contractor, venue, insurer or project specification has named a test standard or product classification.

This step prevents a common mistake. Buyers sometimes begin with a required thickness or colour and only check the application afterwards. Thickness and appearance matter, but they cannot make an unsuitable foam grade appropriate for a regulated use.

Furniture and upholstery foam

The current All Foam upholstery range includes several products marked as fire retardant upholstery grades. Their data sheets state that the relevant grades meet Schedule 1, Part 1 of the Furniture and Furnishings Fire Safety Regulations 1988, as amended. This information is application specific. It does not mean that every upholstery foam meets every commercial, transport or building requirement.

The range includes Average Soft Foam, Medium Foam, High Firm Foam, Reflex Medium, Reflex Firm, Severe Very Firm Foam and reconstituted grades. Each has a different firmness, density and intended use. Fire information is only one part of the selection.

Average Soft Foam is intended for headboards, decorative padding and other light duty uses. It is not recommended for seating. Medium Foam is positioned for general domestic upholstery and deeper cushioning. High Firm Foam is designed for firmer seating and support. Reflex grades offer responsive recovery for premium seating and mattress applications. Severe Very Firm Foam is intended for thin seating where greater firmness is needed. Reconstituted foam is much denser and is used for robust seating, matting and other demanding work.

Selecting a furniture grade does not remove the need to choose the correct comfort and support properties. A fire retardant light padding grade remains unsuitable for regular seating. Check the complete furniture construction

Foam is only one part of an upholstered item. Covers, barriers, fillings, frames and the finished method of construction can all matter. The product data sheet describes the foam grade, not the compliance of an entire chair, sofa, headboard or cushion assembly.

If you are repairing an existing item, identify the original construction before replacing the core. Do not assume that matching the old colour or feel confirms the original specification. Old foam can fade, soften and change shape. Product colour is useful for recognising a listed grade, but it is not proof of fire performance by itself.

If the furniture will be sold, installed commercially or used in a specialist setting, obtain the requirements for the complete finished item. Do not rely on a retail product badge as a substitute for project documentation or professional compliance advice.

Cot and nursery foam needs a specific product choice

Cot Safe Foam is listed as a specialist nursery grade rather than a general upholstery alternative. Its technical document states that it is a combustion modified high resilience polyurethane foam formulated for infant sleeping products. It is listed for cot mattresses, Moses basket mattresses, travel cot inserts and related nursery uses, while the product information states that it is not suitable for seating.

This is a clear example of why the intended use must lead the decision. A foam may have suitable stated fire information but still be wrong for an unrelated application. Likewise, an ordinary seating foam should not be assumed suitable for a nursery product simply because it is marked fire retardant.

When replacing foam in a cot or nursery item, confirm the required finished dimensions, cover construction and applicable product requirements. The foam sheet alone does not establish the safety of a complete handmade mattress or sleeping product.

Standard acoustic foam and Class 0 acoustic foam are different

The acoustic section contains standard charcoal acoustic foam and separate Class 0 products. Both are intended to manage sound reflections within a room or enclosure, but their stated fire information is not identical.

The standard charcoal flat acoustic foam is listed as fire retardant acoustic treatment foam. Its data sheet states that the grade meets Schedule 1, Part 1 of the Furniture and Furnishings Fire Safety Regulations 1988, as amended, and is capable of meeting additional listed flammability standards. The current flat product is intended for recording rooms, home cinemas, booths, rehearsal spaces and similar sound treatment projects.

The Class 0 Acoustic Foam Sheet has a separate technical document. That document states UK Building Regulations Class 0 to BS 476 Parts 6 and 7, together with other listed fire performance. The current AFPCLS0 range is supplied as flat sheets for acoustic and thermal applications where that stated classification is required.

Do not shorten these differences to the statement that all acoustic foam is the same. A standard charcoal acoustic sheet and a Class 0 sheet can both be used for sound treatment, but they do not carry the same product specification. If a contractor, venue or building project asks for Class 0, use the specific Class 0 product and retain the corresponding data sheet.

Acoustic treatment is not the same as soundproofing

Fire performance does not change the basic purpose of acoustic foam. Acoustic foam is used to absorb reflections within a space. It is not, by itself, a complete method for stopping sound through walls, floors or ceilings.

This matters because a buyer may choose a more specialised fire classification and still be disappointed if the material is being used for the wrong acoustic goal. Establish whether the project needs internal sound treatment, vibration control, thermal performance, sound isolation or a combination of systems. Select the foam only for the role it is designed to perform.

Packaging foam has mixed fire information

The packaging range demonstrates why product by product checking is essential.

Packaging Foam Flat Sheet is explicitly marked as not fire retardant. It is intended for protective cases, boxes and transit packaging, and it is not suitable for upholstery. Ethafoam STPE200 is also stated to be not fire retardant. Its technical information directs customers to ask about a flame retardant alternative where one is required.

By contrast, Antistatic Pink Packaging Sheet AS22 is listed on the current product page as fire retardant and is designed for electronic components and sensitive assemblies. The anti static property, intended packaging use and fire description should all be checked together. A pink appearance alone does not prove that another foam has the same specification.

The practical lesson is simple. Do not transfer a fire claim from one packaging foam to another. Flat protective foam, anti static inserts, semi rigid polyethylene and dense reusable grades have different constructions and intended uses. If you are comparing an older convoluted lid insert, its fire status must be checked from the exact product documentation rather than inferred from its surface shape. If packaging will be used in a regulated workplace, transport environment or around sensitive equipment, confirm the complete requirement before ordering. The packaging design, outer container, stored item and location may all affect the final specification.

Closed cell foam and rubber require separate checks

Closed cell products are often selected for sealing, water resistance, protection and industrial use. Their fire status varies across the current range.

AFP30 and AFP45 closed cell polyethylene sheets are marked as not fire retardant. Their product information advises customers to contact All Foam where a fire retardant option is required. Do not infer a fire property from the fact that the material is closed cell, waterproof or more rigid than flexible upholstery foam.

Plastazote LD33 is a separate closed cell polyethylene material that may still appear in older specifications and project references, but it is no longer part of the current All Foam product range. Where a fire requirement applies, use the specification for the exact material being sourced rather than assuming suitability from the brand, colour or material family.

EPDM Closed Cell Rubber Sheet is intended for sealing, gasketing, weather strips, protection and vibration related applications. Its current technical data sheet highlights resistance to UV, ozone and weathering but does not state a fire classification. Choose it when the project needs the properties of flexible closed cell synthetic rubber, and confirm any fire requirement separately before ordering.

A material can meet one part of a project and fail another. For example, a closed cell sheet may provide useful water resistance but have no stated fire classification for the intended setting. An upholstery foam may have the required furniture fire information but be unsuitable for a gasket. Always match the whole application.

Read the technical data sheet carefully

A data sheet should be read as a complete document rather than scanned for one phrase.

Start with the product name and grade reference. Confirm that the document matches the exact product shown on the page. Similar names can refer to different densities, constructions or fire performance.

Next, read the product description and stated applications. These sections explain what the material was designed to do. If your use is outside the listed applications, contact the supplier before assuming suitability.

Then find the fire performance section where one is present. Record the exact wording and standards rather than rewriting them into a broader claim. A statement about furniture regulations is not the same as Class 0. A statement that a grade is capable of meeting a test should not be rewritten as an unconditional certificate for every supplied format or finished assembly.

Review the limitations and disclaimer. The current All Foam technical documents state that the values are a general guide and that customers remain responsible for confirming suitability for their intended application. This is especially important for healthcare, contract, transport, public building and other critical work.

Finally, keep the document with the project records when a customer, contractor or site manager may need it later. Save the product name, grade, thickness, sheet size, purchase date and installation location. Clear records make future replacement and inspection easier.

Do not rely on colour, texture or appearance

Foam colour is not a reliable substitute for the product specification. A pale green sheet may identify the Medium Foam sold by All Foam, while a pink sheet may identify the listed AS22 packaging grade, but another supplier can use different colours. Age, light exposure and manufacturing variation can also alter appearance.

The same applies to texture. Flat and convoluted foam can be made from different grades. A profiled surface does not prove acoustic performance or fire classification. A dense feeling sheet does not prove a higher fire rating. An adhesive fixing system does not determine the fire performance of the foam itself.

Use appearance only to help match a product after the specification has already been confirmed.

Thickness does not create fire performance

A deeper sheet can change cushioning, support, absorption and installation depth, but it does not turn a non fire retardant grade into a fire retardant one. Two sheets of unsuitable foam do not become suitable because they are laminated together.

Thickness should be selected after the product grade. For upholstery, it affects comfort and how far the cushion can compress. For acoustic treatment, it affects available treatment depth and the way the panel fits the space. For packaging, it affects separation from the outer case and control of movement. For gaskets and seals, it affects compression and fit.

Installation materials and coverings also need attention

The foam may be only one layer in the finished installation. Adhesive, covering fabric, facing material, paint, timber, board and surrounding surfaces can all affect how a system performs.

If a separate adhesive fixing system is used, it should not be assumed to give the complete assembly the same fire classification as the foam. Check the product information for the supplied format, assess the fixing material separately and follow the requirements of the project.

Do not cover acoustic foam with an unsuitable solid facing that prevents sound reaching the material. Do not place foam near heat sources, exposed flames or equipment that exceeds the stated operating conditions. Do not use a furniture foam as insulation or an acoustic product as a seating substitute unless the product documentation supports that use.

For commercial installation, confirm the approved fixing method and substrate before work begins. A correct foam grade can still be installed incorrectly.

Questions to answer before placing the order

A useful order check should cover the complete application.

Confirm the exact product name and grade. Confirm where it will be used. Confirm whether the foam will be visible, enclosed or covered. Confirm the required fire test or classification in the wording supplied by the project. Confirm the dimensions, thickness and quantity. Confirm how the foam will be fixed. Confirm whether the technical data sheet is sufficient or whether additional documentation has been requested.

Also confirm who is responsible for approving the material. A homeowner replacing a domestic cushion has a different decision process from a contractor fitting panels in a public building. When several people are involved, obtain written agreement on the required specification before ordering.

Common ordering mistakes

One common mistake is choosing any product marked fire retardant without checking its intended use. This can result in packaging foam being considered for furniture, upholstery foam being considered for building treatment or closed cell rubber being selected where a soft comfort foam is needed.

Another mistake is treating Class 0 as a general quality label. It is a specific stated classification on the Class 0 acoustic product. It should not be added to another foam because the materials look similar.

A third mistake is assuming that all products within one category share the same fire status. The packaging section contains both fire retardant and non fire retardant products. The closed cell section also contains mixed status information.

A fourth mistake is relying on the finished product name rather than the technical grade. Product pages are written to help customers compare options, but a formal project may require the grade reference and exact test information from the data sheet.

A final mistake is ordering before the requirements have been confirmed. Returning or replacing custom cut material is more difficult than checking the specification first. A short technical question before purchase can prevent a costly mismatch.

When to contact All Foam

Contact All Foam before ordering when the foam will be used in a public building, healthcare setting, transport application, workplace system, contract furniture item or another safety critical project. You should also ask when a drawing, tender or client document names a standard that does not appear clearly on the product data sheet.

Provide the intended use, location, required standard, dimensions, thickness, quantity and any requested supporting document. Avoid asking only for fireproof foam. Foam products are generally described by specific fire performance, tests and applications, so the exact project wording is more useful.

Final selection check

The correct choice is a foam grade whose intended use, physical properties and stated fire information all match the project. Start with the application. Compare the exact products within that category. Read the relevant data sheet. Keep the stated standards in their original wording. Check the rest of the finished construction. Ask for confirmation where the application is regulated or critical.

This method is more reliable than selecting by colour, thickness, price or a general fire retardant badge. It also produces a clear record of why the material was chosen, which is useful for installers, customers and future replacement work.
