Good care starts with understanding what the foam is designed to do. Flexible foam sheets used for upholstery need different handling from a mattress, a topper, a protective case insert or a closed cell seal. The safest approach is to keep the product dry, clean and properly supported, protect it from avoidable damage and follow the instructions supplied for the exact material.
Foam does not need complicated daily maintenance, but small mistakes can shorten its useful life or change how it performs. A cushion can lose shape if the support beneath it has failed. A mattress can follow a bowed bed base. A topper can trap moisture if it is covered before it has aired. An acoustic panel can collect dust or detach if it is fixed to an unsuitable surface. The correct care method therefore depends on the complete setup, not only the foam itself.

Use a suitable cover where the product is designed to have one. Keep the foam dry and allow air to circulate around mattresses, toppers and upholstered items. Start with the type of foam product
The phrase foam product covers materials with very different structures and purposes. Care advice should begin with the product group.
Flexible upholstery foam is intended to compress and recover under load. It is commonly placed inside a fabric or vinyl cover and supported by a seat platform, springs, webbing or a solid base. Its condition depends on the foam grade, the cover, the support below it and the way the furniture is used.
Mattress foam is part of a complete layered construction. The current All Foam memory foam mattresses combine an Air Tech ventilation pad, a memory foam comfort layer and a supportive foam base. Their sleeping surface is designed to face upwards, so they should not normally be turned over.
A mattress topper sits above an existing mattress. It can change the surface feel, but its care also depends on the condition and ventilation of the mattress beneath it.
Packaging foam is selected to cushion, separate or hold an item. Its care is mainly about keeping the insert clean, correctly shaped and free from crushing that could alter the fit.
Closed cell foam is commonly used for lining, sealing, gap filling and protective applications. It generally absorbs less water than flexible open cell foam, but each material still has its own limitations.
Acoustic foam is installed to help manage reflections within a room or enclosure. Its surface must remain open and unobstructed, and any fixing method must suit both the foam and the installation surface.
Use suitable covers for comfort foam
A suitable cover is one of the simplest ways to protect comfort foam from dirt, abrasion and direct contact. Covers are particularly important for cushions, mattresses and toppers because these products are used regularly and can be difficult to clean once contamination reaches the core.
The cover should fit the foam correctly. A cover that is too tight can compress the foam before anybody sits or lies on it. If a product has a removable cover, read the cover label before washing or dry cleaning it. A zip does not automatically mean that the cover is machine washable. The fabric, quilting, backing and stitching may require a different method. Remove the cover only when the product instructions permit it, and refit it once both the cover and foam are fully dry.
A mattress protector can help protect the sleeping surface from everyday moisture and spills. The protector should remain breathable enough for the setup and should fit without pulling the mattress corners out of shape.
Keep foam dry and allow ventilation
Flexible open cell foam can receive and hold moisture more readily than a closed cell sheet. For that reason, upholstery foam, mattress foam, topper foam and acoustic foam should normally be kept dry.
Ventilation matters because moisture can come from more than a visible spill. A mattress and topper are used for several hours at a time, while upholstered furniture may sit against cool walls or in rooms with limited air movement. Allowing air to circulate around the product and its support helps moisture leave the setup rather than remaining trapped.
For a mattress, use a base that supports the product evenly while allowing the amount of air movement recommended for the bed. Do not place a new mattress on a wet, damaged or heavily bowed base. If a bed frame has storage beneath it, avoid blocking every route for air to move.
If a foam product becomes damp, stop using or covering it until the cause has been addressed. Allow it to dry fully where the product instructions permit. Do not apply strong direct heat in an attempt to speed the process, because excessive heat can damage foam and covers. Closed cell products are often selected where lower water absorption matters. Even so, water can remain around edges, joints, adhesive layers or the materials beside the foam. Clean the cover before the foam core
For many comfort products, cleaning should focus on the removable cover or outer surface rather than the foam core. This reduces the risk of saturating the material and makes it easier to follow the textile care instructions. A sensible response to a small spill is:
1. Remove loose items and stop the spill from spreading.
2. Blot the affected surface with a clean absorbent cloth. Do not rub the liquid deeper into the cover.
3. Check whether the cover can be removed and how it should be cleaned.
4. Keep cleaning products away from the foam core unless the product instructions confirm that they are suitable.
5. Allow every part to dry fully before rebuilding the cushion, bed or insert.
Avoid bleach, strong solvents and harsh chemical cleaners unless the manufacturer of the exact product states that they are suitable. A cleaner that is safe for a fabric cover may not be safe for polyurethane foam, memory foam, rubber foam, a separate fixing system or a bonded layer.
Do not soak foam simply because water can be squeezed out afterwards. Deep foam can retain moisture inside even when the surface feels dry. Saturation can also affect adhesives, laminated layers, covers and the support beneath the product.
Where contamination is extensive, repeated or linked to hygiene, replacing the affected foam may be more appropriate than attempting an unverified cleaning process. Support upholstery foam correctly
Upholstery foam performs as part of a furniture construction. The support below it can influence comfort, shape and wear as much as the foam grade.
A seat cushion placed over damaged webbing, broken springs or a bowed board may dip even when the foam itself is new. Before replacing the insert, inspect the platform beneath it. Repairing the base first prevents the replacement foam from following the same uneven shape.
The cushion should sit squarely in the cover and should not be forced through a narrow opening in a way that twists or tears the edges. Work gradually around the cover, easing the foam into each corner. Avoid using sharp tools near the insert once it is inside the fabric.
Loose seat and back cushions can be repositioned where the furniture design allows. Moving cushions between equivalent positions can help distribute use, but only do this when the pieces are the same shape, size and grade. Do not swap a shaped left cushion with a right cushion or place a softer back foam in a seat position.
Different upholstery projects need different foam. Average Soft Foam is intended for headboards, light padding, crafts and some packaging uses, but it is not recommended for seating. Keep mattresses on a level supportive base
A foam mattress needs a stable base that supports its full area. A damaged base can create dips, raised sections or uneven loading that the mattress cannot correct.
Check the bed frame before placing a new mattress on it. Look for bowed slats, missing fixings, broken centre supports, movement at the joints and any surface that could catch the cover. Where a slatted base is used, the slats should support the mattress evenly and the spacing should follow the bed manufacturer's guidance.
The three current All Foam mattresses use layered constructions with a defined sleeping surface. Deep Sleeper Comfort combines 2 inches of memory foam with 6 inches of Medium Density Foam. Because these layers have different functions, turning the mattress upside down would place the support base above the comfort layer.
Do not turn a layered mattress unless the supplied care instructions say that it is designed for turning. If the instructions allow rotation from head to foot, make sure there is enough space to move the mattress without dragging the cover across sharp bed frame edges.
New foam products can have a light new product smell at first. Normal airing should reduce it. Remove external packaging carefully and allow air to move around the mattress before covering it with heavy bedding. Keep knives and scissors away from the fabric when opening packaging.

Care for a topper and the mattress beneath it
A topper should lie flat on a mattress that remains structurally sound. It cannot repair broken springs, deep sagging, a damaged support core or a failed bed base. Placing a new topper over a structural problem may hide the issue briefly, but the topper can still follow the shape below it.
Before fitting a topper, inspect the mattress and base. Check that the mattress surface is dry, reasonably even and free from debris that could mark the foam. Position the topper squarely and fit bedding that can accommodate the combined depth without pulling the corners upwards.

Store unused foam sheets carefully
Unused foam should be stored in a way that protects its dimensions, surface and edges. Flat storage is preferable where space allows. Place the sheet on a clean, level surface that supports the full area.
Avoid stacking very heavy materials on top of flexible foam. Prolonged loading can leave the sheet compressed or distorted. Keep sharp tools, exposed screws, rough timber and other objects away from the surface. A small cut can grow when the foam is later handled or compressed.
Do not store foam beside heaters, boilers, hot pipes or open flames. Keep it away from direct heat and any environment that exceeds the conditions suitable for the product. Fire retardant wording does not make foam non combustible and does not remove the need for sensible storage.
Protect pale and coloured products from dirt and transfer from other materials. When several foam grades are stored together, label them clearly so that a packaging grade is not confused with upholstery foam or a standard product is not confused with a specialist fire retardant grade.
Record the product name, sheet size, thickness and order details. This is especially useful for workshops and commercial users who may need to reorder the same grade later. Colour alone should not be used as the product specification.
Protect cut edges and shaped pieces
Cut foam can be more vulnerable at corners, narrow sections and internal cut outs. Lift shaped pieces with both hands and support the full part rather than carrying it by a thin edge.
Keep the original measurements or template after cutting. If a piece needs replacing, the template can be more reliable than measuring foam that has already been compressed in service.
When trial fitting an insert, do not force it into a space that is clearly too small. Remove it and check the dimensions. Repeatedly pulling a tight piece through a narrow opening can damage edges and create an uneven fit.

Care for packaging foam and case inserts
Packaging foam should continue to hold the product in the intended position. Inspect reusable inserts for torn sections, crushed corners, loosened layers and contamination that could transfer to the item.
Remove loose debris carefully. If the insert is fitted inside a case, clean the case separately so that dirt does not collect under the foam. Do not apply an unverified solvent or cleaner, particularly around electronics, anti static foam or adhesive layers.
A damaged insert may no longer provide the clearance or restraint used in the original design. Replacing one small section with a different foam grade can change how load is distributed. Where the case protects valuable, delicate or technical equipment, reproduce the original material and dimensions as closely as possible.
Antistatic Pink Packaging Sheet AS22 is intended for electronics and sensitive equipment. Standard packaging foam should not be assumed to provide the same property. Keep product identification with the insert so that future replacements use the correct material.
If an existing case uses convoluted packaging foam, do not crush its raised profile under unrelated stored items because the profile is part of that insert design. All Foam's current packaging sheet range is flat or specialist rather than convoluted.
Care for closed cell foam and installed fixings
Closed cell sheets such as AFP30, AFP45, Plastazote and EPDM are used for protection, lining, sealing and gap filling. Ethafoam STPE200 is a separate semi-rigid packaging material. The care method still depends on the exact grade and finished application.
Inspect seals and liners for movement, splitting, permanent crushing and lifting edges. A foam strip that has compressed beyond the required contact may no longer close the gap as intended. An insert that has loosened can allow the protected item to move.
Where a separate adhesive or fixing system is used, the bond depends on the installation surface as well as the foam. Dust, oil, moisture, loose paint and texture can weaken adhesion. Clean and prepare the surface before fitting the product, following the requirements of the fixing material and substrate.
Do not repeatedly peel and refit an adhesive backed sheet unless the product is designed for that use. Repositioning can weaken the bond or stretch the foam. If an edge begins to lift, identify whether the cause is surface contamination, movement, moisture, heat or an unsuitable substrate before applying more adhesive.
Avoid assuming that every closed cell foam can be cleaned or exposed in the same way. EPDM is a flexible synthetic rubber foam, while EFP products and Plastazote are polyethylene materials. Use the exact data sheet where chemical, weather or temperature exposure matters.
Keep acoustic foam surfaces open
Acoustic foam works by presenting an open cellular surface to sound within a room or enclosure. Covering it with paint, a sealed coating or an unsuitable dense fabric can obstruct that surface and change its performance.
Keep panels free from heavy dust and physical damage. Use a gentle method that does not tear the profile or compress the material. Do not saturate the foam with water or cleaner.
Check adhesive backed panels and wall fixings periodically, especially on ceilings or vertical surfaces. The substrate must remain sound, clean and dry. A fixing that is suitable for one wall finish may not be suitable for another.
Standard fire retardant acoustic foam and Class 0 products are not interchangeable descriptions. Keep installation records and product identification where a particular fire requirement applies. Keep foam away from heat and flame
All foam should be kept away from open flames, heaters, hot tools and other avoidable ignition sources. Fire retardant does not mean fireproof. A product can meet a stated test or application requirement and still require careful handling, correct installation and separation from heat.
Do not use a mattress, topper, cushion or loose sheet as a temporary surface for hot equipment. Do not store foam against a radiator or near a boiler. Workshops should keep cutting and storage areas separate from welding, grinding and other hot work.
Different products have different fire information. Many furniture grade foams are supplied for upholstery applications. Standard packaging foams may be identified as not fire retardant. The acoustic range includes standard fire retardant and Class 0 choices. Always check the exact product rather than applying one statement to the whole catalogue.

Check the support before blaming the foam
A visible dip or change in feel does not always mean that the foam alone has failed. The support underneath may be damaged, uneven or unsuitable.
For a seat cushion, remove the cushion and inspect the webbing, springs, platform and frame. For a mattress, check the slats, centre rail, legs and frame joints. For a topper, inspect the mattress beneath it. For a case insert, check whether the item has moved or whether fittings are pressing into the foam.
Also check the cover. A shrunken or incorrectly fitted cover can compress the insert and change its shape. A loose cover can allow movement and rubbing. Care is most effective when the foam, cover and support are considered together.
Know when replacement is more suitable
Foam that is torn, heavily contaminated, permanently crushed or no longer able to hold the intended shape may need replacing. The decision should be based on the product's purpose.
A decorative pad can tolerate a minor appearance change that would be unacceptable in a seat cushion. A packaging insert for valuable equipment may need replacing as soon as the fit changes. A topper should not be used to disguise a mattress with deep sagging or structural damage.
