Closed cell foam sheets are useful where a project needs a firmer structure, low water absorption, clean edges or a surface that is easier to wipe than soft open cell foam. They are used for protection, spacing, sealing, case inserts and many workshop projects.
The phrase closed cell covers several different materials. EFP polyethylene, Plastazote, Ethafoam and EPDM rubber foam do not have identical properties, so choose the grade for the task rather than treating them as interchangeable.

EPDM strips can be used for suitable light sealing tasks, but the finished seal depends on compression and surface contact.
Measure the gap rather than selecting the thickest strip. A seal that is too thick can prevent a door from closing, while one that is too thin will not contact both surfaces.
Boat, caravan and vehicle storage
Closed cell foam can line lockers and protect equipment from hard surfaces in caravans, motorhomes and boats.
Ventilation still matters. Non absorbent foam does not prevent condensation elsewhere in the compartment. Keep equipment dry and inspect the storage area regularly.
For sleeping surfaces, use a properly designed custom foam mattress rather than building an improvised bed from random closed cell sheets.
EFP30 and EFP45
EFP closed cell polyethylene sheets are available in black and white, with adhesive options on relevant products.
They suit general protection and spacing tasks where low water absorption is useful. Compare thickness and sheet size carefully because a 2mm liner and a 100mm block serve completely different purposes.
Plastazote LD33
Plastazote LD33 is a cross linked closed cell foam available in multiple colours. It is useful where a clean finish, colour choice and low water absorption are important.
It can be supplied with self adhesive backing. Choose the option only when the substrate and permanent placement are suitable.
Ethafoam STPE200
Ethafoam is a semi rigid packaging sheet available in white and grey. It suits blocking, bracing and impact protection projects.
It is not fire retardant. Do not use it for upholstery or another application that requires a different fire specification.
EPDM closed cell rubber
EPDM is a flexible synthetic rubber foam. It is useful for sealing, padding and gasketing where its material properties suit the environment.
It is different from polyethylene foam in feel and application. Review the data sheet for technical work.
Cutting and adhesive tips
For clean results:
- measure twice and mark lightly
- use a sharp blade
- make several controlled passes
- support the sheet fully
- test curves on an offcut
- dry fit before using adhesive
- keep release paper on until the final position is confirmed
For thicker sheets or repeated parts, professional cutting may provide a better finish than hand tools.
Sound and vibration projects need realistic expectations
Closed cell foam can separate surfaces and reduce light rattles, but it is not automatically an acoustic treatment or an engineered vibration isolation mount. Acoustic performance depends on frequency, mass, structure and installation.

Test adhesives and surface compatibility
Self adhesive backing is convenient, but successful bonding depends on a clean, dry and compatible surface. Dust, oil, textured paint and low temperatures can weaken adhesion.

Keep and label useful offcuts
Small closed cell offcuts are useful for test pieces, protective feet and adhesive trials. Label the grade and thickness because black or white pieces from different products can look similar.
Store them flat, dry and away from direct heat or sunlight. Do not use an unlabelled offcut for a technical application or one with a specific fire requirement.
Choosing closed cell foam for the job
Closed cell foam sheets can solve many small protection, spacing, sealing and organisation problems. EFP and Plastazote work well for liners and inserts, Ethafoam suits semi rigid packaging, and EPDM suits suitable sealing and padding tasks.
