Place the template in the intended position and confirm orientation. Mark top, bottom, front, back, left and right. Trace the final cut line with a fine marker.
For a seat cushion, check whether the front edge is curved and whether the back corners need notches around frame posts. For a boat or caravan piece, record wheel arches, cabinets and tapered sides.
If the left and right sides differ, label them clearly. A reversed template can waste a full sheet.
Mark the foam without distorting it
Lay the foam flat and allow it to relax. Do not stretch it while measuring.
Use a long straight edge for rectangular cuts. Mark several points along the line and join them. A single mark at each end can lead to a bowed line if the straight edge moves.
Use a fine marker that is visible but does not soak deeply into the foam. Place marks on the hidden side where possible.

Closed cell polyethylene and EPDM rubber have different structures from open cell upholstery foam. Thin sheets may be cut with a sharp utility knife against a suitable straight edge, using repeated shallow passes. Thick sheets can be difficult to cut square by hand.
Keep fingers away from the straight edge because a blade can jump over it. A metal rule with a raised hand guard is safer than a flat ruler.
Do not use a hot wire on materials unless the manufacturer specifically states it is suitable and you have appropriate industrial controls. Heating unknown foam can release hazardous fumes and create fire risk.

Cutting memory foam
Memory foam is soft and slow to recover, so pressing it during cutting can distort the finished dimension.

Removing a large strip is easier than shaving off a very thin uneven sliver. If the piece is slightly oversized, mark a new straight line and trim a consistent amount.
