What is convoluted packaging foam?

- camera and instrument cases
- general cushioning where a flexible contact surface is useful
The peaks compress first, so the material can create gentle contact without a precisely cut cavity. The exact feel depends on the foam and profile depth.
Contact area
Flat foam touches a broad area when the item surface is flat. This spreads pressure and can provide stable support.
Convoluted foam initially touches at the peaks. This reduces the first contact area and allows the peaks to compress around uneven surfaces.

Base foam versus lid foam

This matters when calculating protection. A 30 mm convoluted sheet does not provide 30 mm of solid material everywhere.

Movement control
