Class 0 acoustic foam sheets can be used as part of suitable acoustic treatment in cinemas, theatres and performance spaces where the project specification calls for an absorptive material with documented fire performance. The current All Foam AFPCLS0 data sheet specifically lists cinemas and theatres among its typical commercial and public-building applications, but good auditorium acoustics depend on the complete room design rather than one foam product.
Why cinemas and theatres need controlled reflections
A performance or screening space has to balance clarity, atmosphere and even coverage across the audience area. Too many hard reflections can blur dialogue and increase reverberation, while uncontrolled echoes can make speech or amplified sound less distinct.
Cinemas add another challenge because loudspeakers reproduce a wide frequency range at significant level. The room needs acoustic control so that reflected sound does not dominate what arrives directly from the speaker system.
Theatres vary even more. A drama theatre, lecture auditorium, live music venue and multipurpose hall can need different acoustic behaviour. Treatment should therefore follow the intended use and acoustic design rather than a generic instruction to cover every wall with foam.
Acoustic treatment and sound isolation are different jobs
A cinema or theatre can have both internal acoustic problems and sound transmission problems.
Absorptive foam is used to control reflections inside the room. It does not, by itself, create the mass and isolation normally needed to prevent powerful programme sound reaching adjacent spaces.
If a venue needs to keep cinema audio away from neighbouring auditoriums, offices or residences, the walls, floors, ceilings, doors, penetrations and junctions can all be important.

Why Class 0 may be chosen for a public venue
AFPCLS0 is an open-cell acoustic and thermal polyurethane foam manufactured with impregnated fire-retardant compounds. The current All Foam data sheet states UK Building Regulations Class 0 to BS 476 Parts 6 and 7, Class 1 surface spread of flame under BS 476 Part 7, plus UL94 V-0 and 94-5V information.
These are material properties for the supplied foam. They do not establish compliance for a finished auditorium, wall lining, ceiling system, stage construction or decorative assembly.
Where a venue specification names a fire test or classification, compare that requirement with the current technical data and retain the document with the project information. For safety-critical or contract work, confirm suitability before ordering.

Start with the auditorium acoustic design
Before choosing sheets, understand which reflections the design is trying to control.
Useful questions include:
- Is the space primarily for film, speech, theatre or live music?
- Where are the main loudspeakers or performers?
- Which walls create strong early reflections?
- Is the rear wall producing noticeable return reflections?
- How much existing absorption is provided by seats, curtains or other finishes?
- Does the ceiling form part of the acoustic design?
- Are there balcony fronts, boxes or deep recesses?
- Which surfaces must remain reflective for the room to work properly?
In a professionally designed venue, these decisions are normally supported by acoustic calculations and measurements. Foam quantity should follow that design.

All Foam does not currently list convoluted Class 0 foam for online purchase. Do not substitute a different product simply because a drawing or older installation shows a profiled surface.
Choosing treatment depth
The four thickness options allow the material depth to be matched to the available space and acoustic design.
A thin sheet can fit behind a detail where depth is restricted, while a deeper sheet gives more physical absorber depth. That does not mean each thickness corresponds to a guaranteed auditorium performance level.
The result also depends on mounting, coverage, location, room volume and the other surfaces in the space.
If the design needs specific absorption data at particular frequencies, use the project acoustic specification and confirm the required material performance rather than estimating from thickness alone.
Behind screens and around loudspeaker zones
Cinema designs can include absorptive treatment behind or around a projection screen and loudspeaker system. These areas also contain cables, speaker mounts, ventilation and access requirements.
Do not install foam directly over equipment, ports or ventilation openings. Maintain manufacturer clearances and ensure technicians can access loudspeakers and wiring where required.
The speaker system and acoustic treatment should be coordinated so the foam supports the room design rather than obstructing it.
Side walls and rear walls
Side-wall treatment can reduce unwanted reflections, but complete absorption is not always the goal. Some room designs deliberately combine absorptive and reflective elements.
Rear walls can produce strong reflections because they face the screen or stage. A treatment may be appropriate there, but the amount and depth should still follow the acoustic plan.
In theatres, decorative architecture can make treatment locations less obvious. Wall panelling, curtains, balconies and technical galleries all affect how and where foam could be integrated.
Ceiling treatment and overhead safety
Ceiling areas can provide substantial treatment surface, but overhead installation requires proper fixing design.
A general bonding method should not be assumed sufficient for every ceiling substrate or long-term overhead application. Where the design calls for additional support, use the specified method.
Keep foam clear of:
- sprinkler heads
- smoke or heat detectors
- emergency lighting
- ventilation grilles
- access hatches
- loudspeakers
- lighting equipment
- rigging and stage systems
A continuous visual pattern is never more important than maintaining the safe function of building services.
Fixing and retaining the sheets
The current AFPCLS0 sheets are supplied unbacked. This gives the contractor freedom to use a separately specified compatible bonding system, mechanical retention or another approved construction where appropriate.
Surface preparation is still critical where bonding is used. Dusty, friable, damp or heavily textured substrates can compromise the finished installation.

Decorative finishes and black auditorium interiors
Many cinemas use dark interiors to reduce unwanted light reflection. Raw Class 0 acoustic foam has a functional appearance, and any decorative finish added around it needs to be checked as part of the complete design.
Do not paint acoustic foam simply to match the room. Paint can close the open-cell surface and alter the way sound enters the material. It can also introduce a coating with its own fire properties.
If the design calls for fabric or another facing, confirm that the complete system retains the required acoustic and fire performance.
Stage and backstage environments
Theatres include spaces that are very different from the auditorium, such as stages, fly towers, technical rooms, dressing areas and equipment enclosures.
A product suitable for a wall treatment in the audience space is not automatically suitable next to hot stage lighting, machinery or specialist equipment. Check temperature, access, contamination and fire requirements for each location.
